The United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands

(Taken from: "Youth Ministry Strategic Plan 2000 - 2005)

THE UNITED CHURCH YOUTH MINISTRY

The United Church has always recognized the value of an effective ministry to, with and by youth. Over the years many initiatives have been undertaken in an effort to develop and sustain a vibrant youth ministry. Today we celebrate the fruits of such initiatives. We thank God for those who through the influence of this ministry have been led to offer themselves to serve as pastors, full-time workers and leaders within local congregations and the wider society.

We continue to build on the foundation that has been laid in the firm belief that a renewed society and a purpose driven church are largely dependent on sound investment in our youth, for

  • We believe that youth have intrinsic worth.

  • We believe that God in Christ calls all believers into partnership with Him, irrespective of age, gender, colour, race, social status, etc.

  • We believe that youth have the capacity to make significant contribution to Church and society and should be enabled so to do.

  • We believe that youth are a most valued resource and should be given priority in the Ministry and Mission of the United Church.

We pause at this juncture to consider:

  • The changing realities from the technological age and its impact on faith and lifestyle. So we ask, how do we make the Gospel relevant in this technological age?

  • The overwhelming influences of emergent cultures on youth. Thus we question, how do we engender in youth a Christ-centered life?

  • The degeneration of the moral fiber of society and the sense of hopelessness and lack of direction among many youth. How do we inspire in youth, confidence in the Christian hope as the path for the future?

  • The concern for renewal and growth in the United Church.

There is now a clarion call for all our ministers, congregations, youth and young adults to share in an appropriate response within the context of a new vision which is,

A FULLY INTEGRATED, DYNAMIC CHURCH COMMUNITY ENGAGED IN THE CELEBRATION OF JESUS CHRIST.
